5 years ago my wife and I were sitting on the back porch of our newly built house, looking over our 3-acre property and started thinking about how we could take advantage of this space to build a small business during our retirement years.
We began talking about creating a market garden and growing a variety of vegetables. As we began to do our research we decided to focus on growing garlic. This was due to the fact that there is a shortage of locally grown garlic in Ontario, most of the garlic has been imported from China and other countries.
With that decision, we began researching and learning as much as we could about garlic and were surprised to find that there are many garlic varieties out there. We attended workshops and purchased specialty garlic from other small producers and started growing our own 2016. Since then we have been adding new varieties each year and have decided to grow a maximum of 10 different varieties.
We also felt that it was important to not rely solely on one product line and somehow we came across the idea of becoming beekeepers. It wasn't long and I was hooked and beekeeping has become my passion, I continue to do my research and seek out the advice from experienced beekeepers and the more I learn the more I have become more fascinated with beekeeping.
We currently have 42 hives with the plan to grow to 100 hives within the next year or two. In addition to producing honey, I plan to begin queen rearing this summer and begin selling nucs once we have reached 100 hundred hives.
